HAVE YOU CHECKED INTO YOUR MENTAL HEALTH LATELY?
Lets talk about something common, meaningful and necessary… MENTAL ILLNESS. Oh wait; you said that's taboo? Please don't click away, hear me out.
In communities with people of color we act as if mental illness is something that does not affect us. We act as if mental illness looks at African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Armenians, etc. and says "Nah fam, you, are spared" when in fact we should be opening our eyes to the realization that mental illness affects all people, including people of color.
Lets take for instance Rob Kardashian. (Yes he is Armenian and yes that means he is a minority and no I am not giving the Kardashian's a pass at appropriating black culture.) But Rob Kardashian has gone through depression for a long time. We have seen first hand his downward spiral. Some of his symptoms included weight gain, low self-esteem, even distancing himself from his family and the outside world. As a Kardashian their world is already televised for millions to see add on dealing with reality and facing superficial people and relationships it definitely takes a toll.
Most recently Rob had a meltdown on social media where he completely came out of left field slut shaming and humiliating his ex-fiancé Blac Chyna.
Rob, bro chill!
He has ran her name through the mud, posted countless sexually explicit photos of her, posted their conversations and even spoke on her allegedly doing drugs and cheating on him. If this isn't a cry for help I don't know what is.
While this massive destruction of self was going on via social media where were the Kardashian-Jenner clan to come help a brother out, literally? They were nowhere to be found. Mama Kris Jenner eventually stepped in to calm Rob but he wasn't even willing to listen to her. There is a problem with this picture when you flat out don't take help from your family.
At some point you have to accept your illness and deal with it! We all know Rob needs some help and he hasn't been willing to receive it and why not? Is it because he doesn't believe in mental illnesses or he thinks he can handle it alone or he just doesn't care to handle it? Whatever the case may be this wasn't the first time that Rob has allowed us to see him for the sick man he really is!
Maybe Rob just isn't the relationship type. It seems that he just doesn't know how to walk away from a relationship with his dignity (or sanity). He had a bad public break up with Rita Ora and now Blac Chyna.
In all seriousness, I do feel bad for Rob and hurt people hurt people. Until he is right within he will continue to be a ball of destruction and no one wants to see the demise of Rob Kardashian. Even though he has publically humiliated himself and his only daughter's mother we hope this is the last of his social media outburst. We want to see Rob deal with his demons head on and possibly be a catalyst for change in our communities of color where we accept and treat the mental illnesses that affect us.
Rob get better we are rooting for you; we are all rooting for you!
We have to start reading; learning and making sure we are staying actively healthy. Lets not fall into the trap of thinking we are exempt from health issues. As people of color we are pre-exposed to many illnesses and if we turn a blind eye to those things we are only hurting our community and ourselves. We have got to do better so we can be better and it starts by taking our mental health seriously!
Mental illnesses do not discriminate.
African Americans share the same mental health issues as the rest of the population. Yet, mental health remains a taboo topic of discussion within the black community. According to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, African Americans are 20 percent more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population.
